General Information on Carpet and Flooring

Estimating job costs over the phone is very inaccurate. In order to give a true estimate of costs, we need to visit the site that the carpeting or flooring will be installed. HRS Flooring/The Carpet Warehouse offers FREE estimates, and we will gladly come to your home or office around your schedule to help you estimate costs and pick out the best carpet or flooring for your job.
Most flooring is sold by the square foot, a 1 foot by 1 foot square. Carpeting is sometimes sold by the square yard, which is a 3′ x 3′ area (9 square feet).
Unfortunately there is no such thing as an average room, although many rooms are in the range of 12′ x 12′. A 12′ x 12′ room is 16 square yards.
No. Padding is very important, but what really makes the carpet is the thickness, bells and whistles of the type of carpet, type of fiber, construction of that fiber, and style of the carpet.
Yes and No. Stain-proof is a bold statement. It means that if someone tracks roofing tar on your carpet, it will come out. Tar will not come out of carpet. However with the right carpet just about everything else will (bleach, wine, kool aid, coffee, mud, pet stains, etc.). So, Stain-Proof – Close. Virtually Stain-Proof – YES.

Purchasing From HRS Flooring/The Carpet Warehouse

Carpet is sold based on the square foot, or square yard (9 square feet), depending on what company you are buying from. The cost of carpet will depend on how many square feet/yards you need. Carpet can range from inexpensive to very expensive, depending on the quality and style.
Carpet comes in rolls that are 12 feet wide, and therefore is sold by the 12′ wide piece. For example if you want to carpet a room that is 10 feet by 10 feet, you would need to purchase a 10′ x 12′ piece of carpet.

On multi-room jobs, we calculate carpet pieces and cuts in the best way to save you money. However, we try to use seams sparingly, so when doing these calculations, we only place seams where absolutely necessary. It is like a big puzzle, one best calculated by a friendly carpet and flooring professional.

Unscrupulous carpet sellers can make a price seem lower by utilizing more seams and therefore using less carpet. While you may save some money upfront, in the long run your carpet will not last as long. Your best bet is to use someone you trust who can explain everything to you without hiding anything. Ask our Salespeople any question (i.e. where the seams will be, how much carpet they are using, etc.), they will be happy to answer it.

Another dirty trick is to give you a cost per square yard or per square foot that is incredibly low (at or below cost) and then make up for the low price with extra material that you don’t need. When getting an estimate ask a lot of questions to make sure you are getting what you are paying for – no more and no less. Again, Your best bet is to use someone you trust and who can explain everything to you without hiding anything.

When estimating for carpet or flooring it is a good idea to have a professional come and measure so you know exactly how much carpet you need. Your friendly carpet and flooring professional will be able to properly assess the area to be covered and give you an accurate quote.
